Outwitting the English!!

The Under 10s descended upon Cleve today for our annual trip across the bridge.

5 teams per group meant 4 games of 10 minutes and the top 2 teams progressing to either the Cup or Plate final.

Results in the group included:

Llandaff 2 - 0 Chippenham (Scorers: Bradley Park and Henry Marriott)
Llandaff 1 - 2 CRICC (Scorers: Bradley Park)
Llandaff 1 - 0 St Brendan's (Scorers: Ethan Holland)
Llandaff 5 - 0 Clifton (Scorers: Bradley Park x 2, Thomas Boyce x 2, George Payne)

The loss to CRICC meant that they were destined to win the group if they won their last game, unfortunately, St Brendan's put up a spirited performance and meant CRICC, St Brendan's and ourselves were all tied at the top of the group with 3 wins each. Progression into the next round thus came down to points difference, resulting in:

St Brendan's +7
Llandaff +7
CRICC +5

This resulted in a draw between ourselves and St Brendan's so it came down to tries scored to progress into the cup final against Newbridge, unfortunately for us we scored 9 tries but Brendan's scored 10. They thus progressed by the skin of their teeth and pushed us into the plate final.

The final game of the day would therefore be against hosts Cleve in the plate.

We started the final well but the change of rules to allow for mauling didn't go in our favour and we lost countless mauls. A slipped pass and an interception allowed Cleve to capitalise and to into half time winning 1-0.

A good chat at half time and a change in tactics to look for the ground more allowed us to get the upper hand in the game. We started to take charge of the game and forced Cleve to give away penalties.

It was however, from a dropped ball that we drew level, Jacob Wakeling picking up a loose ball and diving in at the corner to score.

We continued to dominate the game and in the last 30 seconds of the game Cleve came in offside again at the ruck. From the play of the ball, Catrin Davies fed the ball to Bradley who drew a defender and threw a "Hail Mary" pass to Jacob again on the wing, Jacob made no mistake as the final seconds ticked away and dived in to score his second of the final!!

Final score: Llandaff 2 - 1 Cleve

A breath-taking end to the day that saw us walk away with the plate for the third year in a row at Cleve and showing we are consistent at least.

Thanks to all the players for a great performance today, adapting well to the English rules and showing they can dominate in passages as long as they stick to their own game plan.

Players of the day had to go to James Burris and captain Gwen Hopkins, both players showed how much of an asset they are to the team in the loose today and between them must have turned over at least 30 rucks and mauls, well done both.
